Burnley’s U21 side are back in action on Friday afternoon – 13th January – when they host Swansea City at the County Ground, Leyland in the Premier League Cup (2pm KO).
The Clarets head into the game, their last home fixture in the competition’s group stages, knowing that only a win will keep their chances of progression into the knockouts alive.
All bar two games have now been played out across Group G, and the two remaining both involve Burnley as following the visit of Swansea, the U21s head to Arsenal on Wednesday night (18th January, 7pm KO).
The Gunners earned 11 points from their six games to top the group. Swansea meanwhile sit bottom with three points, and even a win from their trip to Leyland wouldn’t be enough to take them through.

It’s Stoke City who the Clarets are aiming to leapfrog with the Potters sat on nine points in 2nd after playing out their six games. In 3rd, Burnley have four points to their name with two left to play, so only the maximum of six from those last two will be enough.
Returning to action for the first time in 2023 on Monday (9th January), the U21s picked up three points with three goals in the Professional Development League with a 3-0 win at home against Sheffield Wednesday.
Goals from Mike Mellon and substitutes Seb Thompson & Kade Ratchford made the difference in the second half against the Owls, and those three will be in contention again come Friday afternoon.

Striker Joe McGlynn won’t be involved though having completed a loan move to Kidderminster Harriers until the end of the season, while midfielder Mark Helm has now made the permanent move to Burton Albion.
Visitors Swansea, who are managed by Jon Grey, were also in PDL action on Monday when they drew 1-1 away against Charlton Athletic. Trailing at the break in London, forward Tarrelle Whittaker levelled things up for the Welsh outfit.
He came on from the bench in November when Burnley made the trip over the border for the reverse game in the Premier League Cup on a wet afternoon which saw City run out 5-2 winners.
Entry this time around in Lancashire will be free to all, but if you can’t make it then we’ll provide full coverage over on Twitter via @ClaretsAcademy. A report will also be published here on burnleyfc.com post-match.
