Burnley’s U21 side head south on Tuesday evening – 31st January – when they take on Arsenal in the last of six Premier League Cup group stage games (7pm KO).
The Clarets are no longer able to progress through to the knockout stages of the competition, consisting of 16 teams, having drawn 3-3 at home against Swansea City last time out in the competition.
Michael Mellon – who has since moved to Morecambe on loan until the end of the season - netted a hat-trick when the Welsh outfit visited the County Ground in Leyland.
The point earned however was not enough to take hopes of progression from Group G into this last game against the Gunners.
The top two from each group progress, and Burnley will now finish 3rd with five points currently to their name ahead of Tuesday night’s game.
Stoke City will qualify in 2nd as they have nine points, with Swansea cemented in 4th with four. Both the Potters and Swans have already played out all six of their own games in the group.
Tuesday’s hosts Arsenal meanwhile are safe in the knowledge of their progression having already topped the table, sat on 11 points after five games.
The Gunners won the reverse fixture 3-1 back in September when Mellon was again on target for the Clarets.
Taking place at Meadow Park, the home of Vanarama National League side Boreham Wood, we’ll have full coverage of Tuesday’s clash over on Twitter via @ClaretsAcademy.
