Tony Philliskirk’s youth team picked up a first league win in four games as they triumphed 3-1 away at Stoke City on Bonfire Night.
Will Hugill’s strike in the 90th minute put Burnley in front after Tremaine Eastmond had levelled prior to half time, and Joe Bauress converted a penalty in the second minute of time added on to extend the young Clarets’ lead.
Stoke began on top and forced Charlie Casper into an early save direct from a corner before scoring the opener seven minutes prior to half time with Sam Knowles the scorer from close range.
And after Knowles missed an opportunity to double his tally a few minutes later, Burnley’s Eastmond got the Clarets back on level terms.
A composed finish from inside the area past Stoke goalkeeper Tommy Simkin sent the two sides into the break at 1-1.
Boss Philliskirk brought Sean Etaluku on from the bench soon after the restart, and he almost had an impact with a goal a few minutes later as he tested ‘keeper Simkin directly with a corner.
Teammate Hugill also rattled the crossbar prior to that with Simkin getting fingertips to his volley from the edge of the box but in the last minute of the contest, it was Hugill who came out on top in that battle with a stunning strike.
A well worked move - including substitute George Walters - saw the ball fall to Hugill on the edge of the box and the midfielder hammered into the back of the net to hand Burnley the advantage.
And two minutes later, the young Clarets had a third as Joe Bauress converted from the penalty spot after Etaluku had been felled in the area.
A first win in the U18 Northern Premier League since September will undoubtedly bring Philliskirk’s team confidence ahead of their Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup tie with Preston North End.
Burnley will head to North End’s Springfields Training Ground on Wednesday, November 10 for a 1:00PM kick-off in the quarter-finals of the competition, after which they will head into the international break.
The young Clarets now sit fifth in the league table - at least for now - with other teams in the U18 NPL playing their fixtures today.
