Tony Philliskirk’s youth team recorded back-to-back victories and picked up their second league double of the campaign as they won 2-0 at home to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon (March 5).
Forwards Michael Mellon and Tremaine Eastmond were on target either side of half time to seal the three points, helping the Clarets to climb up to 10th in the U18 Northern Premier League table.
The win at Gawthorpe also saw Burnley record their second league clean sheet of the campaign with a strong defensive display.
First Half
In a quiet opening period at the training ground, neither side was able to gain the upper hand with visitors Newcastle enjoying more possession without ever really testing Clarets’ goalkeeper Sam Waller.
But having found their feet, Burnley kicked on and 27 minutes in, striker Mellon – who signed his first professional contract at Turf Moor recently – brought a good stop out of Magpies’ ‘keeper Max Thompson with a poked effort at goal.
And though he kept that shot out, Thompson could do nothing to deny Scottish youth international Mellon two minutes later as the frontman created space for himself inside the area and unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom corner of the net.
Soon after, Mellon drove forward and switched the ball out towards a trialist on the right wing whose shot rattled the post and bounced away from danger with the visitors eventually clearing their lines.
On 39 minutes, Eastmond then beat his man at the front post to connect with Mellon’s cross from the wing, but couldn’t direct his header goalward with the ball going narrowly wide.
Second Half
At the restart, Philliskirk’s side picked up from where they had left off and doubled their advantage within five minutes through Eastmond.
Northern Irish defender Dane McCullough pushed high up the pitch to intercept the ball and thread through to forward Eastmond, with the latter getting the better of his opponent in the box to fire home in clinical fashion.
Sean Etaluku, Ruairi Behan and George Walters were all given minutes off the bench by boss Philliskirk as the game became quite scrappy in its’ final stages with neither side able to create any momentum.
Despite that, Burnley dealt with what Peter Ramage’s side threw at them in a resolute defensive display and secured a clean sheet to make sure of a 2-0 win.
The young Clarets return to action next Saturday – March 12 – when they make the trip up to Middlesbrough in a 1:00pm kick-off.
