Burnley’s youth team will go in search of a first league victory in four as they begin their November fixtures with a Bonfire Night trip to face Stoke City in the U18 Northern Premier League.
Tony Philliskirk’s side enjoyed success in the Premier League Cup last month, earning a memorable draw away at Arsenal, but sit 11th in the league table at the time of writing having taken one point from their three games in the competition throughout October.
Last time out, the young Clarets fell to a 3-0 defeat against Wolves, and while disappointed with the outcome, boss Philliskirk believes that the result could provide his team with some valuable lessons ahead of their Friday night trip to the Potteries.
He said: “I expect a similar game against Stoke to the one that we had last week against Wolves in terms of physicality.
“We played Stoke at the back end of last season and they were very physical, so we’re going to have to match them in that aspect and be better at doing so than we were against Wolves.
“Set pieces and crosses into both boxes were a really telling factor in last week’s result but now, we have to stand up to a physical challenge. Hopefully as well as doing that, we can play a little bit better with the ball too so that we can cause Stoke more problems defensively than we did with Wolves.
“There are things that we have worked on in training over the last couple of weeks because we’re coming up against more physical sides. Certain things can be done to try and eliminate at least some aspects of physicality from the game and this week, we need to be better at getting those things done.”
As referenced by Philliskirk, the youth team will be no strangers to the Stoke outfit whom they will come up against again on Friday night having met twice in the league last season.
Stoke left Gawthorpe victorious back in March courtesy of a 1-0 victory, but it was the Clarets who reigned supreme in September 2020 with Joe McGlynn and Jake Rooney (2) netting in a 3-1 win. Both of those Clarets have now progressed up into the U23 side.
Back to this season, and Richard Walker’s Stoke side drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough in their previous outing. Boro received a red card close to half time and though City got themselves ahead late on, they were pegged back with an equaliser minutes later to drop two points.
That result – coupled with the Clarets’ loss at Wolves – means that the two teams couldn’t be much more evenly matched thus far in the 2021/22 campaign with both. taking eight points from their opening eight games including two wins and two draws each. Philliskirk’s Clarets do sit a place above City on Goal Difference as things stand though.
Kicking off at 7:00PM on Friday - November 5 – Burnley’s trip to Stoke will be held at the Potters’ Clayton Wood training ground.
Coverage of the game will be available throughout via the club’s official academy Twitter page - @ClaretsAademy.
