10-man Clarets beaten in Yorkshire

A second half turn around saw Burnley U18s lose 4-2 to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday afternoon, with the Clarets playing more than 45 minutes with 10 men.

Kian McMahon-Brown and Benji Wetshi were on target within six minutes of each other at Middlewood Training Ground, but the latter was dismissed shortly after his goal.

There were four changes to the side that started Saturday’s 7-0 victory at Ipswich Town, with Noah Adekoya and Ben Jordison both returning at the heart of the defence.

Adam McCoy started in central midfield and Brandon Pouani played on the left wing, with Jordison wearing the captain’s armband.

The home team started the better on a warm afternoon in South Yorkshire and took the lead in the 14th minute.

Good work from Will Grainger allowed Dom Weston to slide in at the back post and beat Clarets ‘keeper Connor Edwards.

That seemed to kick Burnley into life and the equaliser came via the penalty spot on the half hour from McMahon-Brown.

The 16-year-old used his strength to win a foul in the area and, after picking himself up and dusting himself down, coolly picked out the bottom left corner.

It was 2-1 when Wetshi latched onto a well-weighted Zach Johnson pass and did excellently to hold off his defender and pick out the same corner.

However, the striker received a red card for his part in an off-the-ball incident that earned three Wednesday players a yellow card, and the home team made their man advantage count in stoppage-time.

The goal was similar in style to their first, with Grainger floating a ball into the box for Ernie Weaver to get his head on at the back post.

A change at the break saw Vernon Masara replace Pouani and the Owls almost took the lead 30 seconds after the restart, but Edwards produced a flying save to his right.

Manager Tony Philliskirk replaced McCoy with George Brierley on the hour, five minutes before Sutura Kakay rifled in a half volley to make it 3-2 to the hosts.

After Braidin Derbyshire replaced Troy Savage our best chance of the second half fell to McMahon-Brown.

He showed great resilience to get a shot away under heavy pressure, but Weaver was able to clear off the line.

Our final substitution saw Albert Blackie replace Joe Wilcock with seven minutes of regular time to play, but Wednesday secured all three points soon afterwards.

It was Grainger who was on target this time, turning well to unleash a powerful finish that gave Edwards no chance.

With four Professional Development League North matches to play the young Clarets are top of the table, seven points clear of second-placed Wednesday.
