Clarets progress to FA Youth Cup quarter-finals

Goals from Corey King and James Lewis gave Burnley U18s a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic on Friday night.

The result sets up an FA Youth Cup quarter final against Blackburn Rovers, with the young Clarets having already beaten Wolverhampton Wanders and Norwich City to get to this point.

There were five changes to the side that started the team’s last outing, a 6-0 victory over Rovers, with Connor Edwards returning in goal and Fabio So stepping into the midfield.

U21s regulars George Brierley, Brandon Pouani and Kian McMahon-Brown added attacking firepower, with U16 central midfielder Terry Leonard earning a spot on the bench.

The young Clarets made a fantastic start, with King reacting quickest after Luca Scanlon’s free-kick was parried to poke in a fourth-minute opener.

Tony Phillikskirk’s scholars enjoyed the better of the possession in the first 20 minutes or so, with Pouani also testing ‘keeper Finley Woodham.

Charlton grew into it, though, and Edwards was forced into s smart save with his legs by Shia-Lee Burnham on the half hour.

Burnham then looked certain to restore parity after beating Edwards to a long ball, but King produced a fantastic goal-saving interception.

The last chance of the first half fell to the Clarets in stoppage-time. Scanlon whipped a corner to the back post and Charlton’s Tate Elliott headed the ball off his own post and away.

That momentum continued after the break, with McMahon-Brown’s long-range effort hitting the bar less than 10 minutes after the restart.

The young Clarets would then have been disappointed to not take either of two chances in quick succession, with both Pouani and So being denied one-on-one by Woodham.

Edwards then produced a fantastic fingertip save to deny Burnham from close range at the other end and after Lewis replaced So in the 72nd minute, it took roughly 60 seconds for him to score with his first touch.

McMahon-Brown did well to hold it up, and the number 17 advanced onto the ball to place a first-time effort into the bottom right corner from 18 yards.

Pouani then made way for Braidin Derbyshire and Charlton did their best to push forward at every opportunity.

They were unable to breach Burnley’s dogged defence, though, and referee Samuel Bragg’s full-time whistle sparked scenes of celebration in Leyland.
