Mellon brace and Moonan strike secures victory in Yorkshire

Tony Philliskirk's side came away 3-0 winners over Leeds United on Saturday, with an impressive performance at Thorp Arch.

Dylan Moonan opened the scoring for the Clarets just before the break, with second-half substitute Michael Mellon grabbing two in the final 15 minutes.

And the victory moved Burnley up to seventh in the table, just three points off fifth spot.

The visitors started bright on a sunny afternoon, as Matty Carson delivered a dangerous ball into the area which found Tremaine Eastmond, only for his effort to be denied by Harry Christy.

Philliskirk's side had another chance shortly after as Sam Unwin broke through on goal, but Chrsity did well to deny the striker.

Clarets goalkeeper Sam Waller was then called into action, making an excellent double save to keep out Billy Fewster and then Max McMillan.

But just before the break, Burnley broke the deadlock as Moonan's strike was deflected past Christy.

It was a much quieter start to the second-half, with the first real opportunity coming just after the hour, when Eastmond picked out Dara Costelloe, who fires just wide of the goal.

But with with 25 minutes to go, Keelan Williams and Mellon replaced Jacson Coppack and Eastmond.

And Mellon, who grabbed a hat-trick last time out, doubled Burnley's lead with with just over 10 minutes to go after latching onto Costelloe's pass and firing into the top corner.

However, the in-form forward wasn't stopping there as he bagged a second of the afternoon, this time with a neat finish to seal all three points with eight minutes left on the clock.

BURNLEY: Waller, Coppack (Williams 64), Sassi, Gallagher-Allison, Carson, Ratchford (Hamilton 75), Moonan, Hugill, Costelloe, Eastmond (Mellon 64), Unwin.

Subs: Couch, McCullough.
