Two dramatic late goals saw Tony Philliskirk’s youth team come from behind to beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 in U18 Professional Development League action.
Lucas Wane came off the bench to level things up eight minutes from time before midfielder Frankie Deane’s corner sailed straight in as the clock ticked into time added on, and the Young Clarets held on to secure three points from behind.
Two U16s were named in the starting line-up by boss Philliskirk as Jack McEvilly retained his place at centre back and full-back Logan Carlin made his full debut at U18 level. Zach Johnson was also named on the bench to bring up a trio of U16s.
First Half
Ryan Tioffo had the first effort of the contest at a blustery Burnley Training Centre five minutes in, firing over from just inside the area.

Wigan’s Kyle Worsley then stung the palms of Clarets goalkeeper Jon Ander Vilar Robinson, while Trevon Bryan struck wide from a tight angle at the other end.
Soon after though, the visitors took the lead through Harry Rimmer, who found space in a crowded area to poke home.
Reece Greenhalgh passed up a gilt-edged chance to put the Latics further ahead five minutes before the end of the first half in what was the last action of note.
Second Half
Two minutes into the second 45, Wigan ‘keeper Matt Wonnacott lost track of the ball with the wind swirling and fumbled a long header upfield behind for a corner which was dealt with.
Kian Le Fondre brought the shot stopper into real action just prior the hour-mark, seeing a low shot held following some good work by Bryan.
The same man then made a lung-busting run down the left wing and cut the ball back in the area for Polish youth international Wiktor Gromek to take aim, though his effort was deflected behind.
Philliskirk sent on Wane, along with Dylan Sime, in a double substitution on 72 minutes. And 10 minutes later that change paid off when Wane headed home a leveller at the back post from Bryan’s in-swinging corner, flicked on by Nathan James.
From there on in, as it had been for the majority of the second half, it was one-way traffic towards the visitors’ goal.
Gromek first spun his marker on the edge of the area to bring a smart save out of Wonnacott, and James also headed wide when Wane recycled a set-piece to cross the ball back into the danger zone.
Bryan too was denied in a one-on-one by the ‘keeper having been played over the top, but from the resulting corner, Republic of Ireland youth international Deane found the back of the net to claim a late victory.
Philliskirk’s side take on Crewe Alexandra away from home next Saturday – 25th February with an 11am kick off.
