The Clarets' three-game winning run came to an end on Saturday afternoon, after a 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke City.
Jack Griffiths' second-half strike for the Potters proved to be the difference on a windy afternoon at Leyland.
There were six changes from the young side that beat Newcastle United last week, with Dan Sassi, Matty Carson, Finlay Armstrong, Dylan Moonan, Sam Unwin and Joe McGlynn all coming into the side.
But 15 year-old midfielder Joe Bauress kept his place in the starting line-up, with a second consecutive start for Tony Philliskirk's side.
It took a little while for both sides to get going, with the first real chance coming when Josh Waite headed just over the bar from close range.
Unwin then broke through the City defence, before seeing his dinked effort sail over the bar and onto the roof of the net.
And with minimal chances for both sides throughout the first-half, the two teams headed into the break level.
But it was the Clarets who came out on the front foot in the second-half and had a great opportunity, when Armstrong weaved into the area, before teeing up Unwin, who fired just over.
Philliskirk's side then had another chance minutes later, as Bauress' corner fell nicely into the area for Armstrong, who struck the ball inches wide of the post.
However, just as the hosts were getting a real foot in the game and enjoying possesion, City went up the other end took the lead through Jack Griffiths' strike.
And the Potters came close to a second shorlty after, as skipper Tom Nixon rifled an effort at goal, forcing Sam Waller into action.
Philliskirk's side looked for a late equaliser, but the City defence stood strong to ensure the Clarets' fine winning run came to an end.
