Burnley U15s’ EFL Floodlit Cup journey came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the side lost 3-0 to Burton Albion at their Pirelli Stadium in the Northern section final.
The young Clarets were previously unbeaten in their seven matches in the competition, winning six of those, and the players will have taken positives from this outing as the first Academy team to reach a final this season.
Burnley topped Northern Group B, the only group out of the five in that section to have six teams, with four wins and a draw.
They scored 24 goals in the process and carried that attacking intent into the knockout stages, beating Rotherham United 3-0 in the quarter-finals.
Then came a semi-final against Carlisle United at Darwen’s Anchor Ground, with Burnley winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from James Lewis and Denver Clement.
The U15s started Saturday’s regional final, which was played over two periods of 40 minutes with rolling substitutes, brightly enough.
Striker Warren Taylor and winger Vishon Masara caused problems with their pace, however, Burton scored twice in ten first-half minutes to take control.
Burnley created openings before the interval with James Lewis firing a free-kick goal bound and Clement forcing a fine save.
Taylor also came close to halving the deficit but it was 3-0 after 48 minutes.
The young Clarets showed plenty of fight and Dylan Morrison came closest to finding a way back into the tie when his header smacked off a post, but it ended in defeat.
Reflecting after the final whistle, Head of Academy Coaching Ash Higgins said: “I’m really proud of the group’s Floodlit Cup campaign as a whole.
“The lads have shown a tremendous style of play probably up until today, which was slightly different in terms of the circumstances of the game.
“You could see that playing in front of friends and family in this kind of experience affected some of them, but that’s part of their learning and will be an invaluable experience moving forwards.
“They’ve been a credit to the Club in terms of how they’ve tried to play and we’re all proud of them.”
