Club’s leadership structure bolstered with the arrival of newly appointed Chief of Staff Mark Thompson
Doug Metcalfe to step into Director of Operations role after more than 15 years with Burnley FC
New appointments to the club’s Executive Committee follow the announcement of four more senior off-field hires earlier in the month
Burnley Football Club has further strengthened its off-field management and operations team with two key appointments in newly created roles.
Experienced sports consultant Mark Thompson has joined as Chief of Staff while Doug Metcalfe, after more than 15 years at the club, will take up the role of Director of Operations. Both Thompson and Metcalfe will report directly into Burnley FC Chairman Alan Pace.
Thompson brings significant leadership experience into the club, having worked as a senior commercial advisor in developing strategies for leading sports properties. This includes the City Football Group, where he held multiple roles across business intelligence and sales support, ticketing, sponsorship, and strategic projects.
As Chief of Staff, Thompson will oversee the commercial, retail, ticketing, hospitality and media departments as they execute on the club’s strategic vision.
Metcalfe, as Director of Operations, will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the club and supporting senior management with strategic planning and delivery.
During his time with Burnley FC, Metcalfe has established a culture of excellence with a deep commitment to delivering the club’s vision and various high-profile projects.
This includes the redevelopment of the club’s training ground at Gawthorpe, high-quality accessible stands for disabled supporters at Turf Moor and ensuring the safe return of supporters after a year of behind-closed-doors fixtures due to COVID-19.
Using his extensive experience and knowledge, he will continue to be responsible for all operational aspects of the stadium, ensuring the safe and effective operation of Turf Moor and directing the planning and delivery of matchdays.
Alan Pace, Chairman of Burnley FC, said: “I am thrilled to both welcome Mark to the club and recognise Doug for his incredible contribution to Burnley FC over a number of years.
These two appointments represent two more significant roles within our senior management and leadership team. Together they will join our Executive Committee alongside Matt Williams, Ian Hargreaves, Ann-Marie Bradley and Russell Ball to support our ambitions and efforts to expand and strengthen how we operate off the pitch.”
