Event in North Carolina comes to an end

Burnley’s involvement in the 2024 instalment of TST (The Soccer Tournament) has come to an end, with plenty to celebrate on and off the field.

The Clarets became the first English Premier League club to enter teams in the men’s and women’s brackets of the tournament, which took place at WakeMed Soccer Park in North Carolina this year.

Burnley’s Alexa Newfield scored the first ever women’s TST goal, meeting a perfectly weighted Cheyna Matthews cross to score before the team narrowly lost 2-1 to NC Courage in target score time.

There was plenty to get excited about off the field, with six action packed days for players and fans alike.

Our men’s and women’s teams held meet and greet sessions, taking the time to engage with fans from the States and beyond.

Team captains JJ and Kealia Watt captured the attention of online and in-person audiences with their infectious personalities and passion for Burnley, with JJ taking on the role of women’s team coach in addition to his playing duties.

Two exciting partnerships were announced ahead of time, too, with Visit Detroit agreeing a long-term partnership as our Official US Destination Partner and Miller Lite becoming an Official Back Of Shirt Partner for the tournament itself.

On the pitch, an innovative format saw games consist of two 20-minute halves with a Basketball-style ‘Elam Ending’, where teams must reach a ‘target score’, added on.

Burnley’s men’s team were placed in Group B where goals from Jason McCartney, Chris Eagles and Renaldo Torraj weren’t enough to prevent an opening day defeat to Nati SC.

Then came a defeat to Reggae Rovers before a group-ending reverse to CONCAFA SC, a team led by Pat McAfee, in which former Claret Chris Eagles scored a powerful effort from range.

Burnley’s women’s team competed in Group B and, after the afore-mentioned NC Courage game, recorded a 3-1 victory over Soccerhead FC.

Watt and Matthews both scored to give the Clarets a commanding lead and after the opposition pulled one back, Watt broke free in target score time to secure the points.

Their campaign ended at the group stage, however, with Tampa Bay Sun SC beating them in their final fixture.
