Burnley might have left it late to secure their one nil win over Swansea City in the Sky Bet Championship at the weekend but, when they were awarded a stoppage time penalty, Josh Brownhill had no doubt Jay Rodriguez would find the back of the net.
“His experience speaks for itself. He’s scored away at some big grounds, scored some big penalties. I don’t think there’s anybody else that you want to take a pressure penalty than Jay.”
Brownhill was also part of some clever Burnley mind games when the penalty was awarded. After scoring the winning penalty against Plymouth at the start of October, Swansea could have been forgiven for thinking he’d take this one. Especially when he grabbed the ball.
But the captain had other ideas.
“Jay is the penalty taker when he’s on the pitch.
“I had the ball but it was more mind games so the opposition comes for me and not for him. He then gets the ball and puts it in the back of the net, against Vigs too, so more mind games!
“It just shows his composure and how much it means for him to score as a Burnley lad and I’m always delighted when he scores.”
With almost two weeks between games now for Burnley, Brownhill knows the need for the winning momentum to continue.
“We work so hard. We’re a new-ish team, we’re building, we’re getting to know each other and there’s going to be more games when we’ll have really good performances and stick a few more in the back of the net!
“We are defensively so solid. That’s something we'll continue to work on going forward. We are creating so much and we know if we take more chances we have such a solid defence that increases our chances of taking all three points.”
