Charlie Taylor says he and the rest of the squad would love a cup run to add to what has so far been a terrific season ahead of Saturday’s Fourth Round tie in the Emirates FA Cup against Ipswich Town.
Vincent Kompany’s side will visit Portman Road this coming Saturday, attempting to get their name in the hat for Monday’s Fifth Round draw.
Taylor, who is approaching six years at the Club this summer, is confident ahead of the trip to Suffolk. Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, he said: “We had a good run in the Carabao Cup and just unfortunately came across a good team in Manchester United away from home who are one of the most in-form teams in the world.
“We went and gave a good account of ourselves at Old Trafford, and we’ll fancy ourselves against anyone. There’s no reason we can’t go on and have a good cup run.
“Us as players, and everyone as fans, would love one. It’s a bit of a cliché, but we do just want to take it one game at a time. We’ve got to concentrate on Ipswich at the weekend, they’re a really good team and we know it’ll be no easy game for us.”
A full-back by trade, Taylor has this season also featured heavily at centre-back. He reflected positively on what so far has been a campaign of development, adding: “It’s been a season where I’ve learnt a lot, and I’ve had to play a couple of different positions which I have no problem doing.
“I’ll play anywhere the manager wants me to, and it’s been enjoyable. I think it always is when you’re winning and the team’s doing well, but this season’s had a bit of everything for me.
“I’ve improved, and stepping into a new role I feel as though I’m further on playing centre back than I was at the start of the season. I feel the whole group has come on leaps and bounds.”
And the 29-year-old attributes that widespread improvement to the work that goes on behind the scenes, in particular with boss Kompany.
Taylor said: “He’s arguably one of the best defenders to have ever played in this country. There aren’t many who know much more than him, so you’re learning from one of the best every single day.
“I am literally learning something new every day, even now while I’m getting to an older stage in my career. I’m sure that’ll continue for as long as I’m here.”
The defender also thanked the Clarets fans for their continued support, and says they play a big part in the motivation behind the team’s success.
“It’s really enjoyable [being at the Club]. Turf Moor is rocking, there’s full houses there every week and there’s a buzz about the whole town.
“It’s not just a buzz at the Club or at the training ground here where we are, it’s everywhere you go.
“That feeling comes with winning every week, and in turn that creates this great buzz. Hopefully we can play our part in continuing that.”
