Peru international Oliver Sonne becomes a Claret

Burnley Football Club are pleased to confirm the signing of Peru international Oliver Sonne, who joins on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Danish Superliga side Silkeborg for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old defender, who has over 100 appearances in Denmark’s top-flight, becomes the Clarets' first signing of the January transfer window.

After making the move to Turf Moor, Sonne said: “I’m super excited! To be here and experience the club and the facilities – it’s mind-blowing!

“There’s a lot of reasons I joined this football club. The big one is that it’s a massive club with great ambitions.

“The manager is amazing. He has this aura around him and it’s easy to tell he’s a really nice guy and made a really good first impression.

“I see an environment here where I can develop as a person and a player and get some really good years being one of the main guys in the squad, scoring goals and getting assists.

“The ambition is to go back up to the Premier League and I will fight to make that happen.”

Born in Herfølge, Sonne spent time in the academies of Ejby IF Fodbold, Rishøj IF and HB Køge, before signing for Danish giants FC Copenhagen in February 2018 at 18-years old.

The right-back played several times for the U19s side, but after just a year in the capital, Sonne returned to HB Køge in the summer of 2019 and signed a two-year deal with the club he spent time with as a youngster.

After tallying up over 30 games in two seasons for Køge, the defender earned himself a move to newly promoted Silkeborg in May 2021 and went on to make his debut for the top-flight side against Randers.

2022 proved to be a special year for the defender, after Sonne was recognised for having Peruvian descent and would go on to be included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against the likes of Argentina and Brazil.

This year has also been one to remember for the full-back, as Sonne made his Peru debut in the March international break as a substitute against Nicaragua and then carved his name in Silkeborg history in May, scoring the winner in the Danish Cup final against AGF.
