The manager previewed the league encounter against the Hornets, with an expected sell-out crowd at Turf Moor for the only top flight league match to be played in England this weekend.
Dyche discussed a number of points, including our current league position, the busy upcoming schedule and an update on new striker Wout Weghorst and the returning Maxwel Cornet.
Q: This is Burnley’s first Premier League match at Turf Moor in nearly two months, it must be great to be back on home soil?
Dyche: “Definitely, it has been a long period of time since we last played at home in the league for various different reasons. We are excited to get back to Turf Moor.”
Q: Now it looks like we are getting back to normal after the last couple of months, how much of a hindrance will the number of games Burnley have be from now until the end of the season?
Dyche: “We will wait and see. Now the fixtures are being re-scheduled, the more we learn about them the more we will see how the second half of the season will map out. We of course had some complications along the way including Covid-19. We are still not out of the woods with players missing, Johann (Gudmundsson) has appendicitis, Charlie Taylor is still touch and go, Ashley Barnes is on his way back, but he still needs game time. Maxwel Cornet has only just come back from international duty and Wout (Weghorst) has only just joined us. We have different reasons why players have been missing and we are trying to get everyone back fit and ready to go.”
Q: The mental aspect of the false position in the league at the moment, due to the number of games in hand Burnley have, is that something you would have preferred to have avoided?
Dyche: “It is irrelevant. We certainly didn’t want any games to be postponed, we want to play football. We now have matches in hand and our challenge is rising up the league, quite obviously. The players are clear minded and know the next match is the important one. We have stuck to that mentality for many years and we will focus on Saturday before we worry about any games after that.”
Q: It really is an important game on Saturday. Is it classed as a six pointer against Watford?
Dyche: “We are very well aware of the game schedule and statistically the matches that you have a better chance winning compared to others. However, like I say all the time, it is a season’s work, and it will always be that. We always say the next game is the most important and it doesn’t make or break the season. Of course, it would be a favourable result to win the game, that is quite obvious. Whatever happens, we have to make sure we remain focused and keep with the mentality we showed at Arsenal. We got back to basics at Arsenal against a very good team. We need to build on that game. We were very good defensively, but we now need to go and show we can attack well too in the game against Watford.”
Q: Wout Weghorst, how is he doing in training, and will he feature this weekend?
Dyche: “He has a good chance of featuring. He is fit and well. We have tested him, and he is relishing the challenge straight away. We have a great group here so there is no problem with him fitting straight into what we try and do. Maxwel was a little bit later coming back from the Africa Cup of Nations, we gave him an extra couple of days. We have to be a little bit more careful with Maxwel as he didn’t play too much whilst away on international duty. The training and match schedule is different but Maxwel and Wout will both come into the thinking for this weekend’s match.”
