13 new faces in U18s ranks as they prepare for new season

Tony Philliskirk has added 13 new scholars to his youth team ahead of the upcoming 2022/23 campaign.

The teenagers all formally put pen to paper on two-year scholarships earlier this month with the Club hosting an induction night at Turf Moor.

Burnley's second-year scholars also attended the induction evening, alongside academy staff including Head of Coaching Ian Jones.

11 of the 13 young Clarets are homegrown talents, coming through the academy ranks at Gawthorpe to earn their scholarship.

Among them include goalkeepers Lewis Forshaw and Jon Ander Vilar Robinson, both of whom await their U18 debut alongside forward Dylan Sime and midfielder Jack Rogers.

The majority of the scholars were presented with opportunities in the youth team by Philliskirk and his staff last season, playing up age groups.

Defenders Jack Bates and Joe Ashton are included in that along with midfielder Sonny Pickup.

Strikers Ryan Tioffo and Rohan Vaughan were also regulars in the U18 setup last term, with winger Lucas Wane settling in towards the end of the campaign with some eye-catching stints.

Also able to play as a full back, Wane netted an equaliser in the East Lancashire derby away at Blackburn Rovers in a game which saw the young Clarets come from behind to claim three points and the local bragging rights.

Elsewhere, midfielder Joe Bauress has also penned his scholarship, but will be no stranger to football at U18 level having been playing at it as a regular starter for Philliskirk’s side over the course of the last two campaigns.

An England youth international, the youngster missed just two games in the U18 Northern Premier League throughout 2021/22. With a keen eye for goal, Bauress netted a brace in victory over Stoke City last term, including a strike from the halfway line.

Externally, defender Oliver Sweeney joins the youth team ranks having spent the last nine years with Wolves, while Callum West also begins his scholarship having joined from non-league outfit Macclesfield FC back in May.
