Rebecca Sawiuk has asked her side to be more ‘ruthless’ in front of goal following their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Women’s National League North.
Leah Embley gave the Claret Women the lead, when she latched on to Alethea Paul’s cross at the back post to slot into an empty net.
Anna Morphet replied with a superb free-kick that flew into the top corner from 35 yards out, to stop Burnley from picking up a victory in their first home game of the season.
And Sawiuk believes her side would have won the game if they would have put away the chances they created.
She said: “I thought it was two good teams really going toe-to-toe, the speed of play was really high and there was a real competitive energy as both teams were trying to implement their gameplan.
“I just think we’ve got to learn really quickly to be more ruthless in front of goal and just to take our chances really so overall I think we’re disappointed with that.
“In terms of our performance, we showed really good retention of the ball and secured and controlled it and dominated possession really.
“Anna Morphet has scored a great goal to equalise, but we know better than to concede free-kicks in and around the box like that, so that’s disappointing from our point of view.
It was a tight first half in the game, with both sides seeing a lot of the ball but only half chances really created.
Sawiuk told her team that they needed to do what they were good at when they came in at half-time, but also said they needed to work on seeing games out.
The manager added: “I said to the girls at half-time we just needed to play to our strengths.
“I feel like on any kind of day when we’re at our best in this league, we can beat anyone we come up against.
“We just need to control the play a bit more, and make the ball and the opponent do the work.
“It’s the first time this season we’ve gone in front, and I think we’ve got to learn quickly that our game management has got to be better in that position.
“Nothing really changes for us in terms of processes, win, lose or draw, no matter who the opponent is, we’ll review Monday, reflect on the game and regroup Tuesday to prepare for Fylde in the most professional way we can.”
