Burnley Women play at Turf Moor for the second time in three weeks this afternoon and Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk says her team are aiming to beat Derby County with a ‘good performance’.
It’s the Clarets' last game of the 2023/24 season, with the team beating Liverpool Feds at the stadium two weekends ago.
Their last outing was the 9-1 victory over West Didsbury & Chorlton in the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup final 11 days ago.
Speaking earlier this week, Sawiuk said: “Everyone’s excited for the final game and we’re ready to put in a good performance against Derby.
“We’ve been able to rest and recover since our last game and the players had last weekend off, which was really nice as they were able to spend time with family and friends.
“The first time playing at Turf Moor was enjoyable and a good opportunity for all players and staff to have that real sense of belonging and connection to the football club.
“Beyond that it’s a big pitch which suits our style of play and in terms of the logistics, operation and showcase element of the game we took a lot of learnings from the day.
“We were happy across the whole occasion and I think that puts us in really good stead going into this weekend.”
Burnley were victorious in the reverse fixture back in March, with Aimee Kelly and Abby Clarke coming off the bench to both score in a 2-0 win at the Don Amott Arena.
“It was a fiercely competitive game that last time we played Derby,” Sawiuk continued.
“They’re a really well organised and well coached team with some good players like Amy Sims. We’ll be ready, though – we’ve got a good squad here and we’re in a really good place in terms of our preparation this week. I’m looking forward to getting out there on Sunday.”
Whatever the result this afternoon, the Clarets are guaranteed a 2nd-place finish in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League.
That doesn’t mean Sawiuk and her players have lost any drive to earn three point against the Ewes.
“We had a good meeting with the players on Tuesday night and spoke to them about what they want out of their final game, the same with the staff.
“Some really good things came out of there in terms of the type of performance and how we want to finish the season collectively.
“I’ve got absolutely no doubt that if we can execute the goals that we’ve set, we’ll put in a good display.”
