First-year scholar links up with country’s U17s

Academy midfielder Troy Savage has been called up by Northern Ireland U17s for two upcoming friendlies against Turkey.

The 16-year-old is aiming to build on his experience at that age group level having previously captained the Green and White Army’s U16s.

“I’ve lived in Northern Ireland my whole life and grew up watching the national team, so being able to pull on the shirt is probably one of the best things that could happen to me,” he said.

“It will be two very tough games because Turkey are a good side, however, it’s good preparation for our UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifiers later this year.

“I’m also looking forward to playing in front of my family in Belfast again.”

A holding midfielder, Savage joined Burnley in the summer from semi-professional outfit Glenavon.

Having signed a two-year scholarship he is part of Tony Philliskirk’s U18s squad and enjoyed a training camp in Poland with the rest of the Academy last week.

Wednesday’s friendly against Warta Poznan was a special occasion for him, too, as he netted his first Clarets goal.

Reflecting on his time with Burnley to date, Savage added: “It’s different to what I’m used to in Northern Ireland but, from the very first day, all the players and staff have been very welcoming.

“My family and friends from back home have been supporting me and pushing me on too.

“I’m excited for the new season and although I’ll miss the first league game, I’m hoping the boys can do well and I wish them all the best.”
