Jay Rodriguez and Burnley Football Club have a long-standing affinity, with the striker joining the Club’s Academy after being spotted playing local grassroots football.
Now 34, 2024/25 will be the striker’s 11th as a Claret following the announcement that he has signed a one-year contract extension with his boyhood club.
To celebrate the news, we’ve taken a look back at Jay’s Burnley career to date and picked out some major milestones and key moments from his time at Turf Moor.
Rodriguez made his senior Burnley debut on 29th December 2007, coming on as an 86th minute substitute for Stephen Jordan against Bristol City.
His first Burnley goal was a memorable one, with the forward netting an 88th minute winner against Fulham in the third round of the League Cup on 23rd September 2008.
Rodriguez was on target in the Club’s memorable League Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2009, forcing extra-time with a well-timed volley.
His first league goal came in a 4-2 Championship victory over Crystal Palace at Turf Moor in March 2009.
Just like buses, the forward then scored a 25-yard screamer in a 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest just three days later. That goal later won the Club’s 2008/09 Goal of the Season award.
Rodriguez was the Club’s top scorer in 2010/11 with 14 Championship goals and scored his first hat-trick early in the season after netting all four goals in a League Cup victory over Burton Albion.
Having spent seven years away from Burnley, Rodriguez returned to Lancashire in the summer of 2019 as we looked to tackle the Premier League head on.
He netted his first top-flight goal for his boyhood club on 28th September 2019, thumping home a header from an Erik Pieters cross in a two all draw at Aston Villa.
The striker played a key role in Burnley’s first win at Old Trafford since 1962, playing a neat one-two with Chris Wood before firing into the top corner in a 2-0 win over Manchester United in 2020.
That season also saw Rodriguez score at Anfield to earn Burnley a 1-1 draw against Liverpool, with that game being the only time Jurgen Klopp’s team dropped points at home on their way to the title.
Rodriguez’s 50th Burnley league goal came from the penalty spot against Norwich City in October 2022 and the striker made 21 Premier League appearances in 2023/24, scoring twice.
In total, the one-cap England international has scored 74 goals in 288 Clarets appearances with at least another season at his boyhood club to come.
