Defender Roberts discusses Wales' World Cup Qualifier win over Ukraine

Defender makes Red Dragons World Cup squad

Clarets duo Connor Roberts and Wayne Hennessey both played a crucial part on Sunday, as Wales booked their spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The pair both started the World Cup Qualifier in Cardiff, with Hennessey making nine saves, in an eye-catching performance, that saw the Dragons qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years.

And Roberts, speaking to the Club, admitted it would be the 'proudest moment of his life' and 'a dream come true' if he was to play a part this winter in Qatar.

Roberts on the result and securing a spot in the 2022 World Cup:

“There is no harm in saying, we made history last night.

“It’s been a long time since Welsh football was in this positive place and it’s unbelievable to be a part of.

“I think this group of lads, myself included, just wanted to win on Sunday with every part of us.

“We didn’t play our best performance, Ukraine played well. But we got the job done and can now look forward to a World Cup in Qatar.”

Roberts on his ‘dream’ coming true:

“As a kid, I would have never have even dreamt of playing professional football, never mind play for my country and now prospect of representing my country at a World Cup.

“I just hope now that I will play at the World Cup and put on that Welsh jersey, which would be the proudest moment of my life and a genuine dream come true if it was to happen.

Roberts on Hennessey’s impressive performance:

“We all know how good big Wayne is, for me especially as I see him more at Burnley as well as with Wales.

“We all know his qualities and what he’s capable of, obviously with Popey (Nick Pope) having the season of his life, Wayne hasn’t played lots of games.

“So, coming here there was doubts over whether he would start or not, but after his performance on Sunday, he proved that the manager made the right decision in the end.

“Sometimes luck is on your side and players like Wayne perform like they do, I’m so happy for him and it’s unbelievable for him.”

Roberts on the Wales support:

“In recent years, the atmosphere and support in Wales has gone up another level.

“I have only recently come into the team in the last couple of years, but the lads have had two EURO’s now and now a World Cup coming up, it’s a fantastic achievement for the whole country.

“Not that long ago, people were saying Welsh football was in a dark place in a way, but the supporters have been right a long side and it has just grown and grown.”

Roberts on returning to pre-season with the Clarets:

“I will probably have a little bit of time with my family after this international break, before coming back up.

“I’m looking forward to the season ahead, I’m hoping I can carry some of the momentum from Sunday and the upcoming games into pre-season with Burnley.

“And not only then look forward to representing Wales at a World Cup, but also representing Burnley as a club and town in Qatar too.”
