Defender becomes Sawiuk’s latest summer addition

Burnley Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of experienced defender Jade Richards.

The centre-back has plied her trade in the Women’s Championship for both Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers and becomes Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk’s eighth signing of the summer.

Upon joining the Clarets, Richards said: “I’m really excited. I’ve been here for a little while now and I’m loving it so far.

“A new challenge poses new things, and it was clear to me what Bex (Rebecca Sawiuk, Head Coach) and the team wanted.

“For me the move was a no-brainer, and it will allow me to challenge myself and adopt a new journey.”

Originally from Birmingham, Richards came through the Aston Villa Academy and spent a total of ten years with the Villains.

She joined Blackburn in 2020, making 72 appearances and captaining the side.

As such, fellow new faces Helen Seed and Emma Doyle are familiar to Richards, who played several games alongside the former at the heart of their defence.

On her arrival, Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk said: “We identified Jade early in the window as a player who would be an excellent fit for us.

“She’s a player I’ve come up against many times in the Championship and because of her quality, love of the game, passion and professionalism I’m now looking forward to being on the same team.

“Jade will add value to Burnley on and off the pitch and we are all excited that she has chosen to join us on our journey.”

Head of Women’s Football Lola Ogunbote added: “This is another strong addition to our group and I’d like to personally welcome Jade to the Club.

“I’m confident that her skillset and ambitions are a perfect match for what we’re trying to achieve here, and I look forward to seeing her in action.”
