Burnley booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round with an astounding 4-2 victory against Premier League side AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon at the Vitality Stadium.
Manuel Benson opened the scoring early on, before Ryan Christie equalised just five minutes later, but a quick-fire double from Anass Zaroury just before half time gave the Clarets a two-goal lead at the break.
Dom Solanke then pulled a goal back for the Cherries early on in the second half, but Benson then grabbed his second goal of the tie just before the hour mark to seal the victory on a wet & windy afternoon on the coast.
Manager Vincent Kompany made five changes from the side that beat Swansea City 2-1 on Monday, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Charlie Taylor, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Ashley Barnes, and Manuel Benson coming into the XI on the south coast.
First Half
It was a lively start at the Vitality, with the Clarets nicking the opener with just over five minutes played. Gudmundsson threaded a lovely through ball pass into the area for Benson who rifled home first time into the top corner past Mark Travers in the Cherries goal.
But the hosts equalised just a few minutes later, as Christie intercepted Josh Cullen’s pass across the face of goal, before firing home past Peacock-Farrell to pull the scores level.
Zaroury then had his first taste of action with 17 minutes on the clock, as the Moroccan cut inside and saw his right-footed curling effort sail inches wide of the goal.
Burnley were then forced to make a switch before the half-hour mark, as Taylor Harwood-Bellis looked to have pulled up and made way for Luke McNally, after receiving treatment.
It was a fairly matched first half between the two sides and looked like it would be level heading into the break, until Zaroury slotted home from close range to regain the lead minutes before the break.
The goal came as Barnes latched onto a defensive error at the back, before picking out Brownhill who squared to Zaroury, who made no mistake from close range and stroked it into the back of the net.
And just four minutes later the Clarets had a third and Zaroury had his second of the afternoon, after combining with Brownhill once again with an excellent one-two move, the 22-year-old winger then broke into the box and picked out the bottom corner with a sweet strike.
Second Half
Bournemouth came out on the front foot searching for a way back into the cup tie and clawed a goal back just three minutes into the second half, as Cherries forward Solanke fired in from a few yards out following Christie’s pass to half the deficit to 3-2.
However, the end-to-end cup clash wasn’t stopping there as Kompany’s men grabbed their fourth of the game just nine minutes later in the pouring coastal rain.
This time, Barnes played a key pass into the path of Benson, who picked up the ball just inside the box before curling it home wonderfully past Travers for his second of the game.
Barnes was then involved at the other end of the pitch shortly after, as his headed clearance off the line from a Bournemouth corner denied Gary O’Neil’s side pulling another goal back.
The Clarets had opportunities for a fifth late on, but the hosts did just enough to keep the damage limited, as the away side booked their place into the FA Cup fourth round.
