Johann Berg Gudmundsson admitted his first goal for 18 months had come as a big relief as he capped the Clarets’ comeback.
The Icelander kept his cool to drill home Burnley’s equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw with Brighton as Sean Dyche’s men remained 17th in the table – two points behind the Seagulls and still eight points clear of the Premier League’s bottom three.
Gudmundsson has had more than his fair share of injury problems since his last goal against Southampton on the opening day of last season.
But he underlined his well-being with an impressive performance against a Brighton side which conceded its first goal in five league games when Gudmundsson cancelled out Lewis Dunk’s opener in a tremendous second-half fightback .
“There was definitely relief,” said the Clarets’ wingman.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for that goal. It was good to get it and contribute to getting a point.
“Going 1-0 down it was a good comeback from us, but I think we should have taken the three points.
“I thought in the second half, especially, we were fantastic and created some chances that we should have taken.
“We created some chances in the first half as well, but the second half was definitely better from us.
“We had more tempo to the game and put better crosses in.
“But we’ll take a point after going 1-0 down. Going 1-0 down in the Premier League is always difficult, so coming back is fantastic.
“We have played some outstanding teams over the last two games so to get the point was fantastic.”
Saturday’s draw with Brighton followed a run of six consecutive fixtures against top-10 teams for the Clarets, who got themselves moving again following back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea.
And the response to falling behind and maintaining the status quo with most of the sides around them in the table made it a decent start to a pivotal run that includes games against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion within the next two weeks.
“We always want more. We wanted the three points, but we’ll take the point and move on,” added Gudmundsson.
“We’ve got the FA Cup on Tuesday and then we’ve got another big game next weekend.”
