Ashley Westwood admitted the Clarets came up short in their performance against Chelsea in a defeat that sent Burnley to the bottom of the Premier League.
But the stand-in skipper is backing them to bounce back and kick-start a campaign that is yet to yield a win after Chelsea left Turf Moor with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
“It was a difficult day,” admitted Westwood after the big-spending Blues had extended their unbeaten away record to climb into the top four.
“We started all right and had a big chance for Barnsey, who unfortunately didn’t quite put it away, but they’re a top side and we were a bit off it today, which isn’t like us.
“We were happy with the way we performed against Tottenham and I think we came off it a bit today.
“It’s difficult against a top side like that. They’re up there for a reason. They made six changes and you wouldn’t say they were weakened.

“They have the quality to hurt you and stretched us all over the pitch and credit to them. They deserved the win.
“That’s the difficulty of the Premier League and we need to re-group and go again.”
Chelsea showed no signs of jet-lag after their mid-week Champions League win in Russia as they made half-a-dozen changes to their starting line-up.
Summer signing Hakim Ziyech marked his full Premier League debut with the Blues’ opening goal before half-time and after that the result was never really in doubt.
After Tottenham secured a more fortuitous 1-0 win last Monday night, the Clarets have now lost their opening three home league games without scoring a goal.
But Westwood expects a response, with next Friday evening’s trip to Brighton the last chance to get a first win ahead of another international break.
“It’s not nice. We’ve not won a game yet,” added the midfielder.
“We’ve been here before. I think two years ago we were in this position and we’ve clawed ourselves out of it.
“We’ve got plenty of experience and a gaffer who believes in what we’re doing.
“We are a team that will keep working hard and I’m sure the win will come. It’s a big one on Friday now.”
