The Clarets finished their pre-season schedule with a hard-fought battle and solid display against Serie A side Lazio at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.

Although Scott Parker's side narrowly lost out to the Italian opposition 1-0, the hosts dominated throughout and created a number of dangerous chances, with Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel forced into action on a handful of occasions.

Wearing the newly released black and gold third kit, Burnley started bright and it was a sign of things to come, with Jaidon Anthony coming close with 18 minutes on the clock.

Quilindschy Hartman’s corner fell into the path of the winger towards the back-post, with Anthony receiving and cutting inside onto his right foot to fire an effort straight into the hands of Ivan Provedel.

The Clarets were certainly dominating the opening half-an-hour at Turf Moor, as Josh Laurent was next to come close to bagging an opener, after Hartman teed up the midfielder on the edge of the area, but Provedel was equal to it and pushed it wide for a corner.

Parker’s side had another chance just a minute later, as Anthony’s teasing cross into the box was pushed onto the crossbar by Provedel, before Josh Cullen then saw his follow-up strike denied by the body of the Lazio goalkeeper.

Up at the other end of the pitch, Burnley were limiting Lazio to any real opportunities towards goal, as an opportunity for Nicolo Rovella from a free-kick from 25-yards out was struck well over the target with just over 10 minutes until half-time.

The hosts more than dominated the first-half, with the final chance of the first 45 falling to Oliver Sonne, but the Peruvian full-back saw his header crash off the underside of the bar from Anthony’s cross, before being cleared from danger.

The Clarets started the second-half where they left off from the first, as Anthony struck the crossbar for the second time in the 47th minute, after latching onto Cullen’s corner at the back-post.

However, completely against the run of play, Lazio were then awarded a penalty seven minutes in the second-half, as Hjalmar Ekdal collided with Boulaye Dia inside the area, but Clarets half-time substitute Max Weiß was on hand to save the spot-kick and ensure the score remained goalless.

The visitors did carve open their best chance from open play just after the hour mark, when substitute Elseid Hyaj glanced his header against the crossbar from a corner.

Parker then introduced a flurry of changes with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, as Sonne, Anthony, Foster, Hartman and Walker all made way for Lucas Pires, Luca Koleosho, Loum Tchaouna, Marcus Edwards and Jacob Bruun Larsen.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, the deadlock was eventually broken, as Cancellieri broke through on goal from a swift counter-attack, before finishing underneath the body of Weiß.
