POINTS ARE SHARED IN FYLDE ENCOUNTER

2022-01-26T22:30:18.796Z

A late penalty for AFC Fylde saw the points shared at the County Ground on Wednesday evening in a 2-2 draw against top of the league.

The game started brightly for Burnley FC Women and midfielder Millie Ravening had the hosts ahead after just four minutes with a sublime volley into the bottom right corner of the net.

However, Fylde soon started adding pressure and won a slew of free kicks in dangerous areas in the opening exchanges with both Emily Hollingshead and Faye McCoy sending efforts just over the crossbar.

Captain and goalkeeper Lauren Bracewell was also called upon, making a series of fine saves to ensure Burnley FC Women went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Fylde started better in the second half and came out of the blocks pressing for an equaliser. Once again, Bracewell made a fantastic save and pushed Sasha Rowe’s shot onto the bar.

The pressure eventually paid off for Fylde in the 50th minute as Amy Hughes found a break in the solid Burnley defence to make the score level at 1-1.

Both sides began pressing for another goal, with Hollie Kelsh replacing Dom Cooper and Fylde making a double substitution to try and claim the advantage.

It was Burnley who broke first, with striker Evie Priestley making a brilliant run to score a sensational goal and put the Clarets back in front in the 80th minute.

A Fylde corner was tipped over the bar and Bracewell was tested again as the clock ticked down.

However, in the last minute of added time Olivia Wilson was judged to have handled the ball by the referee and Fylde were handed a penalty.

McCoy converted the spot kick, bringing the score level with almost the last kick of the game.
