The Clarets had earlier given away a lead for the fifth time this season, when a goal either side of half-time from the hosts turned the game on it’s head.
But another wonderful strike from Cornet earned a point, with Sean Dyche’s team refusing to give in, in a classic end-to-end Premier League contest.
Although they stay in the bottom three, Burnley are able to take a vital point back to Turf Moor from the south coast.
It was a firing start from the Clarets, as they struck first with just 13 minutes gone when Ivorian summer signing Cornet got on the end of an excellent cross from full-back Matt Lowton, sending the travelling support into raptures.
That was a second goal in his last three games, following his joint club record move in August, and wouldn’t be the last time he worried the Southampton defence across the 90 minutes.
The right wing was a constant source of attacking threat for the Clarets in the first half, with Dwight McNeil and Lowton’s combinations causing the hosts big problems.

McNeil set up Chris Wood with a perfectly weighted pass but the New Zealand international's shot was saved.
At the other end the defence was also busy. The returning Charlie Taylor had already made a sharp challenge to deny Theo Walcott inside the penalty area at 0-0.
James Tarkowski had to make a wonderful last-ditch tackle to stop Southampton striker Armando Broja only yards out. The home side also had Mohamed Elyounoussi's header hit the outside of the Burnley post.
Walcott and Nathan Redmond missed good chances without troubling Nick Pope in goal but eventually the Burnley resilience was broken after Southampton full-back
Tino Livramento headed home a corner, giving Pope no chance. Unfortunately, Dyche’s men had hardly got a touch in the second half before they found themselves behind.
Tarkowski uncharacteristically lost the ball inside the Clarets half and only seconds later Broja breezed past him and fired beyond Pope for 2-1.

But the Clarets showed they are made of stern stuff and Cornet’s stunning volley hauled them level, with just over half an hour left to play.
The summer signing lashed home from 20 yards out with the Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy rooted to the spot.
Minutes later McNeil fired just over the bar, as the away end roused the team to look for a winner, midfielder Ashley Westwood also came close with a decent chance.
Pope had to be alert to deny Ibrahima Diallo but Burnley weren’t given any huge scares, Tarkowski and Nathan Collins dealing with everything thrown at them in defence.
The draw sees Burnley move onto four points but still searching for that first league win of the campaign.
