Tony Philliskirk says that his side’s 3-0 victory over Luton Town in the third round of the FA Youth Cup was a deserved one, and has praised their performance at the County Ground in difficult conditions.
Will Hugill opened the scoring for the young Clarets with George Walters doubling their advantage in added time at the end of the first half, while an Adam Wedd own goal in the second half secured the win for Burnley.
Played amidst the swirling winds of Storm Barra, Philliskirk reflected on the win post-match in Leyland.
He said: “We deserved to win, our work rate was outstanding and I’m just really proud of the lads yet again after tonight. In such awful conditions, we showed what we are all about and now we go through to the next round of a great competition to be involved in.

“The second goal which we scored right on half time was a massive one for us, and getting the third in the second half has made it seem a comfortable evening on the scoreline but with those conditions, I don’t think it ever was.
“We had to dig in and I thought that we defended really well. We worked so hard all over the pitch throughout the game and when he was called upon, Sam [Waller, Burnley’s goalkeeper] made some excellent saves.
“Win, lose or draw, this group has been outstanding in what they have done throughout this season. Even when the performance hasn’t been there, the effort levels have.
“All I ever ask of them as their manager is that they give their all. Once again that was the case tonight and we were on the right end of the result.”
Burnley will face a trip to either Fleetwood Town or Liverpool in the next round of the competition with those two sides playing their respective third-round tie this coming Saturday – (11th December).

Young Clarets’ boss Philliskirk believes that regardless of the opponent, his team will be ready for another cup contest.
He said: “Whoever we end up playing, it will be a massive game for us because of the competition and how highly we regard it as a club.
“The FA Youth Cup is a massive challenge, you can come up against some top sides but having great spirit can take you a long way in the game. I’ve touched on this before and I talk about it with the lads a lot.
“Not many teams like playing Burnley these days so whoever it is that we face, we will more than look forward to it.
“For now, we will enjoy the win against Luton, and I will give a big pat on the back to our lads for their performance tonight.”
Prior to the Clarets’ third-round tie with the Hatters, a pitch inspection had to take place with the County Ground’s playing surface being deemed playable by officials.

Post-match, Philliskirk wanted to pass on a message of thanks to those involved in maintaining the pitch at the home of the Lancashire FA as he added, “Considering the amount of rain that we’ve had over the last few days, I think that the pitch was in great condition tonight.
“I would like to praise, congratulate and thank all at the LFA – especially their ground staff - for getting this game on. As a team and as a club, their work is hugely appreciated.”
With no game this coming weekend, Burnley’s youth team now return to action in ten days’ time (18th December) when Liverpool are the visitors to Gawthorpe in the U18 Northern Premier League, with a scheduled 11am kick-off time.
