Tony Philliskirk was pleased with the important minutes his players gained in their first game of their Scotland-based pre-season camp.
The young Clarets ran out 1-0 winners against Dundee at St Andrews, as Jack Rogers scored the only goal of the game with a strike from the edge of the area in the first half.
Along with the win, Philliskirk was impressed with the physical test his players faced against tough and older opposition.
The U18s boss said: “Even though in pre-season results aren’t necessarily that important, it was nice to win the game 1-0.

“The biggest thing we got out of that was that we played very strong opposition in Dundee, and they had a few older players than us as well, so physically it was a really good test for us.
“It was the first 60 minutes for some of the players and then the wholesale changes came, and we were U17 for the last half an hour.
“I thought we did really well to even compete with the older, stronger player so yeah there’s a lot to take out of that.
“We saw some really good things in that performance there and then there were other areas that we identified that we need to work on but all in all, it was a really positive day."

Today’s victory also saw minutes for many of the younger first year scholars who linked up with the youth team this summer after signing in June.
Philliskirk was full of praise for how they ‘adapted’ and delighted with the performances they managed to put in against the Dee.
“We knew they’d be decent, but they’ve adapted to it and done better than we thought, and they’ve been smashing in the principles of play that we are trying to incorporate at this level, similar to the first team.
“We’ve got some really good technical players and if we can just get the tactical side right, I think they’ll only get better.
“I think we saw some real glimpses of good play and when the game got a little bit edgy at times towards the end, it was really nice to see the younger players standing up to that side as well.”
