Defender signs on ahead of new season

Burnley Football Club are pleased to have re-signed former women’s team captain Alethea Paul.

Paul, who enjoyed a successful 2023/24 season in Lancashire, becomes the latest addition to Matt Beard’s squad with the new season edging ever closer.

“As soon as I came back it sort of felt like home, and it feels like I’ve not been away,” she said.

“There are some familiar faces which is really nice too, so it’s a good feeling to be back.

“I spoke with Lola (Ogunbote) and, looking at the vision for the Club and the players and manager we’ve brought in, you can see where we’re going.

“I’m really eager to be part of that journey as well.”

Paul spent time with both Manchester United and Manchester City as a youth team player, winning the league and cup double in her final season with City’s U21s.

She then made the step into senior football with Championship side Sheffield United, spending five seasons in Yorkshire before moving to Burnley in 2023.

Paul quickly established herself in the Clarets starting XI, making her debut in an opening day victory at Liverpool Feds.

Her experience and leadership skills earned her the captaincy role, and the 26-year-old’s first Clarets goal came in 4-1 home victory over Stourbridge in October 2023.

Paul totalled four goals in 18 appearances across all competitions and left on a high, coming off as a late substitute in a 3-0 victory over Liverpool Feds at Turf Moor.

After a year away, the defender is back and ready to tackle the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League head on.
