Clarets boss Scott Parker said he was pleased with what he saw from his team in Tuesday night's Carabao Cup second round victory over Derby County.
Goals from Aaron Ramsey and a late winner from Oliver Sonne saw the home side secure their spot in the next round and Parker said plenty of positives could be taken from the game.
“Overall, I'm pleased. Pleased with us coming out and winning the game and getting through to the next round.
“It was a good opportunity for a lot of the players to get some more minutes in their legs, for sure. It’s still really early stages of the season, two games in really in terms of the league and a lot of these boys for different reasons, some making a debut tonight, some coming back from injury, and some boys who have probably not had a lot of minutes since pre-season, really. So, it was a brilliant opportunity to get some minutes in their legs, and I'm pleased with that, and everyone seems to have come through that.
“Then overall, pleased that we go through to the next round, really.”
With penalties on the horizon Parker praised his players for the well worked winning goal finished by Oliver Sonne in added time.
“Tonight, we started the game very, very well. Obviously, well worked goal, and then the game at times becomes a little bit sticky. A real disciplined team in a low block, and we probed really, but just lacked a little something in the final third.
“I think the winning goal for us probably summed up the sort of level of detail we needed. It was a lovely ball through the lines, a nice set from Barnsey and then a really nice bit of quality from Mikey as well. When you're playing against teams like that, you probably just need that little bit of quality to try and unlock it and that was pleasing. So, overall, I’m really pleased, generally pleased. Positives are some minutes in the legs; the boys will be in a better place for that and then pleased obviously to win the game as well.”
Parker was also happy to see midfielder Aaron Ramsey net 90 minutes and a goal following a long period on the sidelines through injury.
“I was really pleased for him. I thought he played really well tonight as well. He's been out for a long a long time Rambo, it’s been a long road for him. To get back, have 90 minutes, score a goal as well, and his general play, he was involved in the second as well. So really, really pleased for Rambo, he deserves that. It was a good performance generally from him.”
The Head Coach made 11 changes to the team that started Saturday's win against Sunderland, with the cup tie a great opportunity to rotate the squad.
"As always, this is a long season ahead, like every season we’re going to need every single individual, every single player was here really. So again, tonight, I thought the subs coming in, made a big impact on that and like I said, these boys out here tonight while some are in different situations it was pleasing again you see us together.
“That probably grinded us out, to be fair. We had the quality in the end, of course we did, but I felt like we were constantly on the front at times, while, of course there were elements where we need to improve, and there were elements which we were a little bit short on, but overall the positives are we came out, we got the win and we're through to the next round.”
