Two more Burnley goals for Nathan Tella in the 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic helped lift the Clarets further ahead at the top of the Championship.
It’s also taken his total for the season to sixteen. But he wants more.
“I do feel really confident in front of goal. But then again I think when you’ve got a team like this who can create chances, slide players in, I feel like I always have the opportunities to score.
"Thankfully today I was able to get two and on another day I could have had a hat-trick but I’m just happy enough we got the win and we look on to the game on Wednesday.”
With at least eleven more games to go this season, Tella has now admitted he’s already hit the goal target he set himself when he moved to Turf Moor. So now he’s raising his bar even higher.
“Yep…when I joined it was ten and I even felt that was a bit far! But I realised that this team, the way we play, we were always going to create chances so probably by around October or November, just before the World Cup, I was just like - I need to change this target!
“Obviously I kept a mental note I was changing it but when people asked me I was always like - yeah, it’s ten it’s ten - but in my head it was going to be higher!”
He’s keeping his new total close to his chest but does admit he has to share the success with his teammates and the coaching staff.
“Honestly, it’s just a joke to play with these boys! They’ve taken me in really well and I feel like I’ve learned so much from the manager, the way we play and the boys as well. It’s been really great. It’s a joy for all of us to be involved in.”
He’s also keeping his feet on the ground and his eyes firmly focussed on the most important thing…the next match.
“We take every game at a time and that’s what we’ve got to do regardless. It’s a league game next, we can increase the gap and there’s no reason why we can't do that on Wednesday. Everyone is only thinking of that. Eating well, recovering well, sleeping well and getting on with the game.”
