Burnley v Southampton 07/08/10
An Ashley Barnes brace and Johann Berg Gudmundsson strike sealed an impressive opening day three points for the Clarets as the hosts ran out deserved 3-0 winners against the Saints.
The Clarets included summer addition Erik Pieters in the starting line-up at a rainy Turf Moor, whilst Jay Rodriguez was named on bench after returning to his hometown club in July.
Burnley started on the front foot in the season opener, with Chris Wood finding the back of the net in the 16th minute only to be ruled out for offside from Barnes’ delivery.
Despite it being the beginning of August, the drilling rain and swirling winds were certainly playing it’s part as Gudmundsson’s strike sailed wide of the post before Nick Pope then made a fine save to deny Nathan Redmond’s effort.
But the Clarets breakthrough came when Pieters’ long ball towards the area was latched onto by Barnes and fired home past Angus Gunn to give Sean Dyche’s side the lead.
Seven minutes later the pair combined again as another pinpoint Pieters cross was steered home wonderfully by Barnes on the volley.
Gudmundsson added salt to the wounds and sealed the win with 15 minutes left, after nicking the ball from Ryan Bertrand and racing towards goal before beating Gunn with a curled effort into the far corner.
