Burnley v Nottingham Forest 07/8/10

Summer signing Chris Iwelumo’s header on the stroke of half-time proved to be the difference in a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the Championship season.

Alongside Iwelumo, new signings Ross Wallace and Dean Marney were also included in the starting XI with youngster Jay Rodriguez on the bench for the Turf Moor clash.

Forest started brightest of the two sides and came close to opening the scoring when Wales forward Robert Earnshaw struck the post in the 23rd minute after firing a long-rang effort just wide moments before.

The visitors were on top and wasted a second opportunity when Nathan Tyson misplaced a fizzing pass across the face of goal aiming for two unmarked teammates.

Burnley then created their first chance after a tricky start and it was Ross Wallace who whipped in a teasing cross aiming for Andre Bikey inside the area but Chris Cohen was there to clear the danger.

Bryan Laws’ side had built up momentum leading into the break and the deadlock was broken on the 45th minute, as Iwelumo guided home Wade Elliott’s pinpoint cross with a diving header into the bottom corner past Lee Camp to give the hosts the lead.

The home side started the second half how they had finished the first and nearly doubled their lead when Clarke Carlise’s header was denied by Camp.

Forest looked for a way back into the game and chances from Tyson & Blackstock wasted chances after firing wide and heading over the cross bar respectively.

The win saw the Clarets secure an opening day victory in the Championship and get the 2010/11 campaign off to a dream start.
