Burnley FC Women are gearing up for the biggest game in their history.
And midfielder Megan Dykes is determined not to let the occasion pass them by as she prepares to face Manchester United.
The Clarets entertain United in the fourth round of the women’s FA Cup on Sunday.
Matt Bee’s side will have a massive gulf to bridge from their status at tier three of the women’s game against Women’s Super League side United.
But Dykes believes Burnley – in the fourth round of the competition for just the second time after knocking out Fylde and Sunderland – will revel in their underdog status.
“I think we deserve to be where we are from the past two games,” said the midfielder who converted one of the spot-kicks in the Clarets’ penalty shoot-out win over Sunderland to book this weekend’s glamour tie.
“We’ve focused game by game. We’ve gone to toe-to-toe with both teams and credit to them.
“They both gave us a good game but I think that’s made us more confident in ourselves, knowing we’ve got 120 minutes in our lockers.
“And with the penalties, I’d like to say the nerves aren’t there, but I’m not going to lie, I was nervous stepping up to take that penalty and I was happy to net that.
“You can tell in training everyone of us is putting in that extra one per cent.
“From the players, to the staff and all the coaches, we’re all up for it and really excited.”
While United are a full-time team sitting fourth in the top-flight of women’s football, the Clarets only returned to competitive action last month after their league programme had been curtailed due to the Covid pandemic.
They have since beaten their two rivals in the National League Northern Premier via extra-time and then penalties to give themselves the chance of one of the biggest upsets possible.
“We’re up for it and we’ll be ready,” added Dykes – who joined the Clarets from Blackburn Rovers earlier this year.
“It’s Manchester United and what more could you want?
“With what happens in the FA Cup, can we be one of those team to make history? Who knows? We’ll see on Sunday.
“The coaches are doing everything they can to get us ready for this game. We’re going to make it tough for them.
“We’re not going to make it an easy match. We’re going to fight.”
