Ben Mee insists the Clarets have what it takes to accelerate their slow start to the season and climb away from the bottom end of the table.
Burnley resume their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace at Turf Moor next Monday evening with Sean Dyche’s men still looking for a first win.
A total of two points has left the Clarets in 19th-place – having played a game fewer than all the other teams, bar one, in the lower half of the division.
But after a chance to re-group and assess during the international break, Mee is encouraged by what he sees when he looks around the dressing room in the collective bid to move away from the bottom three.
“We’re still confident and there’s a good feeling around the place,” said the captain.
“We’ve played some top teams and we know we need to improve.
“We’ve had to work on some things, but we have a lot of experience in the squad and we’ve been in this situation before.
“We’ve been written off before and come back a number of times, so there’s no panic. Everyone is calm and we trust in ourselves to produce when we need to.
“At the minute we’re still a bit of a work in progress. Against Spurs we put in a positive display and we were unfortunate not to get something from that game.
“Being away from home in the last game and getting a point also shows progress, so we know where we need to improve.
“We need to create more and develop our play a bit more, but we’ll work hard to bounce back. We trust in ourselves to bounce back and we have a good mentality, which will serve us well.”
Mee’s return to the Burnley back four in a goalless draw at Brighton ahead of the break coincided with a second clean sheet and a further point on the road.
Dyche’s men need to build on that back at Turf Moor where they have won just once since last season resumed post-lockdown in June and suffered defeats to high-flying Tottenham and Chelsea after the last international shutdown.
The Clarets also need to boost their goal output, having failed to score in their last four fixtures.
But Dyche’s men have recovered impressively from unproductive starts before – notably two years ago when they won just three matches in the first half of the season before going on to finish 15th in the table.
And Mee is looking to start another run by getting the first three-pointer on the board as the defender prepares to face Palace for the first time since scoring the winning goal at Selhurst Park at the end of June - his last game before returning from a thigh injury at Brighton a fortnight ago.
“We need to get going as soon as possible and we know that once we start winning games, the confidence comes flooding back and I do believe that the harder you work, the more things will go for you,” Mee added.
“We’re very confident. As I said, we’ve plenty of experience and we’ve got a lot of players who have come from lower down and have had to work hard and fight for all they have achieved.
“Within that dressing room, there is a lot of fight and heart too, so we know that with good players and a strong mentality, we can be confident of going out there and putting in good performances.
“Things will improve the more confident we get as a group, so there’s plenty to look forward to.”
