Defender happy with season's work as Clarets aim to move up on final day

Matt Lowton’s goal was so good it needed double-checking!

Lowton’s stunning volley that capped the Clarets’ sensational 3-0 win at Crystal Palace was his first Premier League goal for almost eight years.

And it left his delighted team-mates looking for clarification.

“The lads said they couldn’t believe it. They said VAR wasn’t checking for off-side, they were checking it actually happened!” Lowton laughed.

The defender was cheered into the dressing room by his colleagues at the end of a magnificent afternoon for the Clarets as they moved 11 points clear of the drop-zone.

Early goals from Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Jay Rodriguez paved the way for a third away win of the season and Lowton provided a glorious finishing touch two minutes after the break with his first top-flight goal for the club.

“We started perfectly with two goals in 10 minutes,” he added.

“We got a bit sloppy towards the end of the first half, so we wanted to make sure in the second half we were right on it and started off right.

“I read the clearance and managed to get on it. I got on a good run and Jay found me with a good pass. I just tried to keep my eye on the ball and you practice the technique all your life.

“I knew I’d caught it well. It was a case of getting past the keeper and I was delighted when it went in.

“I don’t score many, but when I do they feel good.

“I have been trying to get forward a little bit more and get involved and I’ve felt the confidence building over the past couple of performances.

“It’s eight years since the last one, so it’s nice to get on the scoresheet again.”

Burnley’s first win in four league games lifted them up to 16th place in the table.

And it was the ideal way to start a vital eight-day run which continues with back-to-back home games against bottom-three sides Fulham and West Bromwich Albion.

“We’ve got a huge week and after this win we’ll go into it full of confidence,” said Lowton.

“Three points was the main thing, but to chip in with a goal as well, and a clean sheet, it was perfect.

“We’ve got a run of games where we need to put points on the board and we’ve started well and we’ve done that.

“We keep adding to the tally. There are a couple of games coming up next week which are huge for us as well and we’ll be looking to put more points on the board and pull away even further.”
