The points were shared after a hard fought contest at a rain soaked London Stadium.
Vincent Kompany's side were unchanged from last weekend's defeat to Bournemouth, only the substitutes saw a switch with Josh Brownhill returning following his one match suspension.
The Clarets started brightly showing positive signs in the opening ten minutes. The good work paid off when a rocket from David Datro Fofana put the Clarets ahead, leaving Areola no chance.
In response to the goal West Ham pressed forward, however the Clarets defence were organised and cleared away any danger.
A notable chance for the home side came shortly before the half hour mark, when Kudus sent a cross in which Bowen managed to connect with but it didn't trouble Trafford as it travelled past the post. An even better chance came just a minute later when Ward-Prowse was well placed in the box but the ball in was just behind him.
West Ham's Mavropanos was next to try his luck, driving forward he managed to get a shot away but hit the side netting.

Minutes before half-time Hammers captain Soucek pulled Odobert back, picking up a yellow in the process and giving the Clarets an opportunity with a free-kick. Taken by Bruun Larsen the attempt was too central and collected by Areola.
As the game moved into stoppage time at the end of the first half - Burnley added another goal.
Nice work between Bruun Larsen and Josh Cullen saw the Clarets captain send the ball into the box and then deflected into the back of the net off defender Konstantinos Mavropano.
Seconds before the whistle Sander Berge very nearly netted, when his shot was just inches wide of the post but topped off a positive opening 45 for the visitors.
There were changes for both sides at the break, David Moyes made two with Kalvin Phillips and James Ward-Prowse replaced by Edson Alvarez and Michail Antonio. A Clarets switch saw Jacob Bruun Larsen withdrawn for Josh Brownhill.
West Ham halved the deficit within the first minute of the second half when Lucas Paqueta picked up the ball, drove forward and sent his shot past Trafford. Burnley were to have plenty of defending to do as West Ham had come out for the second half full of energy.
The break was on when Josh Brownhill powered forward, he found Fofana who managed to get the time to steady himself but his shot was calmly collected by Hammers keeper Areola.
In end to end action, Paqueta almost found an equaliser but he sent his left footed effort just wide.
It was goal scorer Paqueta who came closest again when he latched onto a ball but Trafford got down well to deny the Brazilian another.

Burnley's first yellow card went the way of Lorenz Assignon. A resulting Aguerd free-kick was well worked towards goal, eventually landing with Kudus but he couldn't keep his effort down.
Kompany's second change of the afternoon came in the 67th minute, with Hannes Delcroix introduced for Wilson Odobert.
The defender picked up Burnley's second yellow and Sander Berge joined him not long after for bringing down an advancing Bowen, as West Ham pushed forward in the hunt for a second.
Another substitution saw former Claret Danny Ings come on for Nayef Aguerd, before a few minutes later a challenge by Paqueta on Esteve resulted in a yellow for the West Ham man. A minute later it was the Frenchman who found himself in the book, for his challenge on Paqueta.
The London Stadium thought they'd equalised when Danny Ings found the back of the net. But, a VAR check deemed Antonio to be offside and the goal was disallowed.
As the board showed eight minutes added time, this time Ings did bring the Hammers level. Finding the ball in the box he turned and fired his volley past Trafford to make it 2-2.
A late substitution saw a Clarets switch with Gudmundsson replacing Vitinho.
As the game drew to a close both sides had chances to win it in end to end action. Ings came close when he hit the bar and Burnley came agonisingly close when Berge did well to lay the ball off to fellow midfielder Brownhill but the shot was straight at Areola.
A fighting performance from the visitors meant the points were shared at the London Stadium.
