Second-half goals from Jay Rodriguez and Josh Brownhill saw Burnley seal a fourth consecutive win in the Sky Bet Championship and ensure a fifth straight clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.
The opener came just seven minutes into the second-half, as Rodriguez was in the perfect place to turn home Josh Laurent’s pass from close range, before Brownhill slammed home from 12-yards to seal the victory for the Clarets.
Head Coach Scott Parker made two changes from the side that played Coventry City on Tuesday night, as Luca Koleosho and Bashir Humphreys came into the XI for Hannibal and Lucas Pires.
Zian Flemming and Josh Brownhill returned to the bench, after both missing out last time out.
Burnley started the game well, enjoying plenty of possession and carving open the first chance just before midway in the first-half.
Koleosho’s long ball into the area found the head of Rodriguez, but the striker could only guide the ball onto the roof of the net.
In a tight contest, the Clarets’ first effort on target came just before the half-hour mark, as Koleosho saw his low drilled effort from inside the box denied by the legs of Johansson.
City came closest to opening the scoring just before the break, as Tom Cannon saw his strike saved well by James Trafford, before CJ Egan-Riley then blocked Bae Junho’s back-heel effort on the line from the follow-up.
After a fairly quiet first half in terms of chances, it took the Clarets just seven minutes inside the second-half to break the deadlock.
Connor Roberts’ lofted pass into the area found former Stoke man Laurent, with the midfielder teeing up Rodriguez from close range to poke home and give the visitors the lead.
Burnley then had another opportunity shortly after, when Jaidon Anthony raced in on goal chasing the ball down, which he dinked nicely over the on-rushing Johansson, only for it to be cleared away just in front of the goal line, as the pair clattered into each other.
Parker’s men came inches close to a second just before the 70th minute, as Laurent whipped in a fine cross towards the back-post, which Anthony met but could only lift over the target with a first-time effort.
The Clarets then made their first change of the afternoon with 20 minutes left on the clock, as Brownhill and Flemming replaced Sarmiento and Rodriguez.
As Burnley had their foot on the gas pushing for a second, the away side were awarded a penalty as Cullen was brought down inside the area.
Brownhill stepped-up to the spot and slammed home his second penalty of the season to ensure the points returned to Lancashire.
