Clarets cruise past Lilywhites in Central League Cup

Burnley’s U21s secured a second win of the season in the Central League Cup on Tuesday afternoon with an impressive 4-0 victory over North End at the Burnley Training Centre.

Jez Davies opened the scoring in the 1st minute of the cup tie before Kian Le Fondre then doubled the lead midway through the first half. A penalty from Han-Noah Massengo followed in the second half before Lewis Richardson concluded the scoring late on.

Manuel Benson completed a successful hour as the winger gathered more minutes under his belt whilst four U18s were named amongst the matchday squad, with one starting as Marley Leuluai lined up in defence.

First Half

The Clarets broke the deadlock with only a minute played when Benson’s swinging cross was turned in from close range by Davies to give the hosts an early lead.

Davies nearly doubled Burnley’s lead shortly after when his low driven effort was pushed away by the hands of Pradic.

Massengo then tried his luck when his strike from just outside the area fizzed wide of the post.

But with 19 minutes on the clock, the Clarets added a second when Massengo teed up Le Fondre to stroke home into the bottom corner and give the hosts a two-goal advantage.

Second Half

The Clarets started the second half on the front foot and looked for a second when Healy-Byrne’s stinging shot was palmed over for a corner.

The lively Massengo then came close again claiming his first of the afternoon but his rifled effort was just wide of the target.

But the midfielder did have his deserved goal with 13 minutes left after stepping up to the spot and firing in from 12-yards to extends the home sides lead.

Chances were minimal for the away side but Wilson had an opportunity after breaking on the counter but couldn’t find the goal from the edge of the area.

Burnley added a fourth of the game when Richardson weaved into the area and slammed home into an empty net after rounding Pradic.
