James Trafford's magnificent double penalty saves in the final stages of Burnley's draw with Sunderland saw the points shared in a dramatic finish at Turf Moor on Friday night.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock across the 90 minutes in an end-to-end encounter, before Trafford stepped up to become the hero (twice!) of the game in the dying stages.

The Burnley No.1 saved Wilson Isidor's first penalty in the 87th minute, before then keeping out the Frenchman's second spot-kick in stoppage time to ensure the Clarets remained 15 matches unbeaten and undefeated on home soil in the 2024/25 campaign.

Scott Parker named just the one change from the last league outing against Blackburn Rovers, with Lyle Foster coming into the XI for Jeremy Sarmiento.

The first effort of the game came five minutes in when Jaidon Anthony’s corner was hooked by Foster into the side netting.

In a lively start, Sunderland then looked to carve open a chance of their own shortly after, when Isidor was threaded through on goal and after rounding the on-rushing Trafford, Maxime Esteve was there to make an exceptional block, before taking the ball away from danger.

Anthony had a fine opportunity himself with just 12 minutes on the clock, after Foster teed up the winger inside the area, but his stinging shot was pushed wide by the hands of Anthony Patterson for a corner.

The Clarets were dominating possession and controlling the game and with just under 10 minutes until the break, the hosts had another chance.

Josh Brownhill nipped into the area past the defending Patrick Roberts, but Patterson was there to smother the skipper’s fizzing low ball into the box aiming for Foster and Zian Flemming lurking just yards out.

Anthony was causing Black Cats full-back Dennis Cirkin all sorts of problems, as the pacy winger spun past the defender for the third time in the first-half, before seeing his cross towards the edge of the area hacked away.

Despite the Clarets enjoying plenty of the ball and coming closest to breaking the deadlock, the two sides went into the break goalless.

Five minutes into the second-half, Burnley had their third effort on target through Bashir Humphreys’ header, moments after Isidor had struck just wide of the post after breaking through on goal.

With both sides limiting each other going forwards, Parker turned to his bench just after the hour mark with Sarmiento replacing Flemming.

Burnley were looking the most likely to break the deadlock and the lively Anthony had another strike on goal in the 73rd minute, but Patterson was equal to his curled effort.

With the game approaching the 90th minute, the Black Cats were then awarded a penalty, after Isidor tripped up outside the area, with referee Anthony Backhouse pointing to the spot.

The Sunderland striker stepped-up from 12-yards, but saw his tame strike saved by Trafford, in what looked like to be the final crucial moment of the game with only stoppage time left.

However, in the sixth minute of added time, the visitors were given a second opportunity from the spot following Oliver Sonne's collision with Cirkin, but Isidor's second effort was again denied by the hands of Trafford to ensure the points were shared in a goalless draw.
