Burnley's unbeaten Sky Bet Championship run was extended to 12 matches on New Year's Day, as the Clarets were held to a goalless draw with Stoke City at Turf Moor.

The Clarets had chances to clinch a winning goal on a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, but the result sees the Clarets still undefeated at home and a 16th clean sheet of the campaign secured.

Scott Parker made four changes to the side that played at Middlesbrough on Sunday night, with Lucas Pires, Jeremy Sarmiento, Luca Koleosho and Jay Rodriguez all coming into the starting XI.

The first real opportunity of a quiet first-half fell to Jaidon Anthony. After being teed up by Koleosho, the winger could only curl it over the target from outside the box.

Anthony then turned provider and looked to pick out Sarmiento inside the area, but the Ecuadorian forward could only glance it wide of the goal from Anthony’s cross.

Connor Roberts was next up to try his luck, as the defender drilled an effort from the edge of the box, but it was headed over by a City defender for a corner.

In a relatively quiet 45 minutes, the final chance of the half came Anthony’s way, but the 25-year-old’s strike from a narrow angle blazed well over the goal.

The first effort of the second-half was from the visitors with their first real chance, as Tom Cannon’s fierce volley was palmed away by the hands of James Trafford.

Minutes later there was a strong claim for a Burnley penalty, as Anthony saw his strike from inside the area blocked by Junior Tchamadeu, but referee Gavin Ward waved away the hosts’ appeals.

Centre-back reflects on Stoke City draw

Stoke were beginning to grow in confidence at Turf Moor and won themselves a corner on the hour mark, when Bae Junho’s effort was deflected over the crossbar.

With Burnley still pushing for the opener, Parker then turned to his bench with just over an hour played, as Zian Flemming and Josh Laurent were introduced for Rodriguez and Koleosho.

Roberts then planted a header just wide of the post from a corner, as the Clarets began to put their foot on the gas.

However, it was the Potters who had another opportunity with 15 minutes left to play, when Lewis Koumas unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, but it could only rattle the crossbar.

As both sides pushed for a winning goal, Parker made another double change with Lyle Foster and Bashir Humphreys coming on for Cullen and Pires.

The Clarets were looking dangerous, but were then reduced to 10 men as the game approached stoppage time, with substitute Hannibal shown a straight red card for a foul on Potters full-back Tchamadeu.

With the game drawing towards a close, Foster saw his low effort denied by Viktor Johansson, before Laurent then headed over the target from close range in stoppage time.

In a game full of effort, the points were shared.
