The Clarets suffered late penalty heartache for the second Premier League fixture in a row, as Mohamed Salah’s 95th minute spot-kick won it for table-topping Liverpool at Turf Moor.
With the game entering the final minute of second half stoppage-time, Hannibal was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box, and Salah stepped up to make no mistake from 12-yards.
Earlier, the Clarets - who competed magnificently throughout the 90 minutes to largely reduce Liverpool to half-chances - were reduced to ten men six minutes from time, when Lesley Ugochukwu was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
It was a performance of courage and character from Scott Parker’s men, but ultimately – for the second fixture in a row – a last-gasp spot-kick proved to be their undoing.
Scott Parker made two changes to his team following the recent international break, as Josh Laurent and Loum Tchaouna came into the starting XI, with Hannibal and Jacob Bruun Larsen making way, the latter side-lined with a slight knock.

On a wet and windy afternoon at Turf Moor, Liverpool bossed the opening exchanges, enjoying long spells of possession, but it was the hosts who crafted the first opportunity of note in the seventh minute.
Josh Cullen broke up play in the middle of the park, releasing Tchaouna, whose low ball across the penalty box found Jaidon Anthony. The wide-man took one touch to set himself, before firing a rising shot over the bar from 18-yards.
At other end, Cody Gakpo’s whipped corner was met by Ibrahima Konatè, but his close-range header flew over.
The first flashpoint arrived on the quarter hour mark, when Ugochukwu was adjudged to have fouled Alexis Mac Allister on the halfway line, referee Michael Oliver immediately brandished a yellow card.
Shortly after, Liverpool left-back Milos Kerkez was the next in referee Oliver’s notebook, carded for simulation in the penalty area.

Burnley were growing in stature as the half progressed, with Cullen and Ugochukwu at their devilish best in disrupting the visitors at every given opportunity and the front-three of Anthony, Lyle Foster and Tchaouna relieving the pressure by getting the Clarets up the pitch.
Liverpool made the first change in the 38th minute, as Andy Robertson replaced Kerkez, who was perhaps fortunate not to have picked up a second yellow moments earlier.
Robertson had Liverpool’s first shot on target moments later, prodding an effort straight at Dubravka.
Soon after, Hugo Ekitike’s sublime piece of skill saw him get beyond the last line of the Burnley defence, but from a wide position, his effort flew across the face of goal.
That proved to be the last chance of the half – as the game remained goalless at the break.
Liverpool made a substitution at half-time, replacing Mac Allister with Conor Bradley.
The visitors showed more urgency at the start of half, wasting no time in getting on the front foot, with first Ryan Gravenberch firing a volley over and then Bradley heading wide.

Burnley were still a constant threat on the counterattack though, with Tchaouna’s pace and Anthony’s industry keeping the Liverpool defenders guessing.
Dominik Szoboszlai was next to try his luck from distance, but Dubravka was equal to it, diving to his right to produce a fine save.
Parker made two changes soon after the hour, with Florentino and Hannibal entering the fray at the expense of Cullen and Tchaouna.
As the match entered its final 20 minutes, the Clarets faithful were getting right behind the hosts, but it was the visitors who came close to breaking the deadlock on 72 minutes, Federico Chiesa glancing a header wide with his first touch after coming off the bench 60 seconds earlier.

Burnley were reduced to ten men with six minutes remaining, Ugochukwu picking up his second booking for late lunge on Florian Wirtz.
Down to ten, the Clarets suffered another blow in the fifth minute of stoppage-time, when Hannibal was adjudged to have handled inside the box – Salah stepped up and converted, to leave the large majority of the Turf Moor crowd gutted, but proud of their teams’ efforts.
