Ian Maatsen was alert to the rebound of Vitinho’s shot in the Clarets win at QPR on Sunday afternoon.
The defender scored the second goal of the game and helped Burnley keep a clean sheet, their seventh in the league so far this campaign.
Talking post-match, the 20-year-old believed Burnley did enough to take home the three points on the day and described his delight at being back on the scoresheet.
“We started the game really well. We had them in the first half and we stuck together as a team. We deserved to win, three beautiful goals so, really happy.”
Following Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson’s opener, Maatsen doubled the Clarets lead in the second minute of injury time ahead of the half-time break, to give the away side a cushion heading into the second half.
Well positioned, Maatsen was quick to react to the rebound after keeper Dieng kept out Vitinho’s effort.
“I’m delighted [with the goal]. It’s been a while since I scored, the first game of the season, but now I’ve come back from the break, so it pays off. I just have to keep going, keep believing in myself and give everything for the team and then we go on a run.”
Sunday’s game saw the return of Darko Churlinov and Scott Twine, who made an appearance late on following lengthy injury spells and Maatsen is pleased to see his teammates involved.
“They were injured for a long time, but they worked hard, and they came back in training. I’m very happy for them that they came on the pitch, they gave us energy and hopefully they work hard in training, and they will get more minutes than now.”
The Clarets travelled in numbers for the game and the defender isn’t taking the boost the supporters give the squad for granted.
“It’s always nice to see them support all the way. We try to give our best every day on the pitch and today we have a big three points and hopefully the fans are happy now.”
On the next game at Turf Moor on Saturday against Middlesbrough he finished: “I can’t wait. We’ve been back from a break so let’s go and win the game of course. It’s a good atmosphere at Turf Moor so I can’t wait to see them again.”
