Matt Lowton believes his Burnley teammates produced their best first half for a long time in the victory over Brentford.
The Clarets went three goals clear in a perfect opening 45 minutes, eventually winning 3-1 to claim a first league success of the 2021-22 season.
Lowton managed to help create the opener for Chris Wood with a long pass, and then got the second himself for his third goal for the club.
The full-back said in the week he wanted to contribute more going forward, but even he was surprised to score a header.
“It think it was the best first half we’ve had for a long time really,” said Lowton. “I thought we matched their tempo and went beyond it.
“We knew we had to get in behind their centre-halfs, rather than go too direct and Woody (Chris Wood) and Maxwel’s (Cornet) runs were perfect.
“I did more going forward today which was great. I mentioned in the week wanting to contribute more and was delighted to do that.
“I don’t score many back-post headers, if any actually.
“It was nice, I went on a little bit of a run and stayed up there as the ball was in and around the box.
“Chaz (Charlie Taylor) put a great ball in, and I just attacked it. I managed to get good contact on it and it was nice to see it go in the net.”
As well as scoring the second, the Burnley right-back also created the opener for Chris Wood to give the Clarets a dream start.
Lowton said: “I hope I can claim an assist, I don’t think it went down as one, but I’ll claim it as one!
“Woody deserved it because he has been working hard, and was a real presence up there today, so I’m delighted he got a goal as well.
“We knew they would start with tempo, they are still buzzing from promotion, so we knew the start would be important.”
Although he had the thrill of grabbing the second himself, Lowton was quick to point out the most important part of the day was the three points.
He added: “The win was huge. Everyone had talked about us not getting a win yet, the main thing was to get three points on the board.
“We knew they (Brentford) would bring the tempo and we had to match it.
“We had to grind it out in the second half, but it doesn’t matter how that first win comes.
“It was both relief and delight in the dressing room after. We were off it a little bit second half, which we know we can’t do in this league.
“It’s about building on that first period going forward and knowing how to control a game. But we were delighted to grind it out in the end.
“Winning breeds confidence, so we’ll look to build on that going into Chelsea.”
