Matt Lowton is delighted to be back in business and ready to play his part in a Claret revival.
Lowton returned to starting duty for the first time since June and Burnley’s second game back post-lockdown when he lined up against Tottenham.
It could have been a baptism of fire against a side which had banged in 19 goals in their previous four games.
But the right-back rose to the challenge in a back four which barely gave Spurs a look at goal before they scored with their only attempt on target 14 minutes from the end to secure a 1-0 win.
“I thought we deserved more,” said Lowton.
“We played well and stopped them creating chances, which they’ve been doing at will recently.
“We’re disappointed to come away with nothing, which is a good sign.
“I thought it was a good collective performance and we look back to us. If we play like that we’ll pick up points, definitely.”
The Clarets have secured only one point from their opening five games but were on top for lengthy periods against a Tottenham side that moved up to fifth in the table.
James Tarkowski saw a header cleared off the line and Josh Brownhill, Ashley Westwood and Johann Berg Gudmundsson all had shooting opportunities.
And Lowton is looking to build on that when Tottenham’s London neighbours Chelsea come to Turf Moor on Saturday.
“It is frustrating. It’s up to us to create more chances and take them when they come but we’ve got the base there and back to what we’re good at,” he added.
“In the last couple of weeks the training has been top-end. The lads have been working hard and getting back to what we’re good at.
“We’ve shown in the last two games the work-rate and the togetherness and we’ll keep building on that and the confidence we’ll take from the performance last night will help us going into the weekend as well.
“It will be another tough one. But if we work hard like we did today and the two boys up front put themselves about like they did we’ll look to make it difficult for them.
“No centre-halves will want to play against that and hopefully we can turn one of the chances into a goal.”
Lowton’s return was a timely one with Erik Pieters sidelined by a calf injury and Phil Bardsley not yet ready to return following a period of self-isolation.
And the 31-year-old was delighted to be back to launch another Premier League campaign.
“Nobody wants to be injured,” Lowton said. “It’s tough, but you’ve got to stay mentally strong, do the work with the physios and the rehab with the boys outside and when the chance comes you’ve got to be ready to take it.
“Hopefully I can build on that now and help the boys get some points on the board.
“It’s been frustrating, but it is what is and it’s good to be back.”
