Matt Lowton is looking ahead to a bright future for the rest of this season and beyond after signing a new contract at Turf Moor.
Lowton was unable to celebrate his new deal with a victory as the Clarets saw their winning run ended by a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.
The Blues’ first victory under new boss Thomas Tuchel brought to an end Burnley’s three-game winning streak.
Lowton had no complaints at the outcome as the former champions flexed their muscles to keep the Clarets at bay.
But with Sean Dyche’s men slipping just a place to 16th in the Premier League – and still eight points clear of the bottom three after an excellent run of form either side of Christmas – Lowton is happy with the bigger picture.
“They were good. With a new manager we knew they were going to be right on it with a point to prove and they’re top players,” said the right-back, who has extended his stay with the Clarets to June, 2023.
“I thought in the first half we had a couple of good spells and got up the pitch well but just didn’t quite create the chances to get a goal and get ahead.
“I think they stepped on again in the second half and showed what top players they are, not just with the ball but off it as well.
“When it’s backs-to-the-wall against a team like this, it’s inevitable they’re going to create chances.
“At 1-0 we’ve always got a chance but we just didn’t get in good enough positions to get a goal.
“They played well and probably deserved the result in the end.
“But to come away with six points from the last three games – and a great FA Cup win as well – we’re still full of confidence and we’ll take that into Wednesday night and try and get three points there.
“We’ve put a number of points on the board in the last couple of weeks. We’re in a pretty strong position and we want to keep moving up the table and in the next few weeks pick up some big points.”
Lowton was one of the Clarets’ top performers at Stamford Bridge as he continued his productive run in the side.
His form this season has helped earn him a new deal to extend a Burnley career that began with a move from Aston Villa in June, 2015.
And the 31-year-old is looking forward to adding to his 155 appearances for the club after joining team-mates Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Kevin Long and Erik Pieters in agreeing fresh terms.
“I’ve loved every minute of being here and to sign on for another two years I’m over the moon,” Lowton added.
“You have to work hard to get a new contract in whatever walk of life, so when the gaffer approached me and said the club was willing to do something I was delighted.
“I was really happy when they said they wanted to keep me and hopefully I can keep helping the club.
“It’s been a large chunk of my career already, so to extend it even further is fantastic for me.
“I love everything about the place. The way we work is very typical of my up-bringing from a hard-working background and taking nothing for granted.
“It’s exactly the same here. It really suits me down to the ground and I’m delighted to be able to stay even longer.”
